130Million.. Not new information. These are the indictments. Funny how the media never really picked up on Acxiom and their breach of 1.6 BILLION consumers information. This is a consumer information aggregator... You know the little shopper tags you carry on your keychain? The information is complied and re-sold to buyers of information (i.e insurance companies[car, home, health]), various marketers, you name it. Enough you get the idea. Do me a favor... Spread the word of this Identity Theft Summit. www.IdtSummit.com

“An educated police force and population can tremendously reduce the economic, and National Security impact of Identity Theft.”

Dr. David W. Powers, Founding Member of U.S. Department of Homeland Security

On The Radar Screen

Before IDT was even on most peoples radar screen, it was happening. What the media is now calling IDT was then called credit card fraud, and bank fraud (and it still is). The shortfall of understanding on this crime is the media, and therefore the general think that CCF/ BF is all IDT is. Myself and others within the industry are working to correct the misconceptions and disinformation. Stay tuned.

The beginnings

Nineteen years ago: I am deployed to South Korea with the United States Marine Corps for a training mission. Ths mission took me through various 'locales' within the country. The entire time- a briefcase is handcuffed to my wrist. This was my first real 'wake up call' if you will to the importance of information security. A few months later I find myself in the same type of scenario, only with even greater need for security within the combat theater of Desert Storm. Since those experiences, I have been ever conscious of that importance of securing private and non-public information.
Jump to present day, and here I am organizing the National Law Enforcement Identity Theft Summit to bring together as many law enforcement agencies and investigators as possible to increase the awareness, education, and preparedness of cities and towns throughout the United States.
The title of this blog indicates the posts that you will be able to find here. We will cover where Identity Theft was with the briefcase handcuffed to my wrist to the complexity of scams, scripts, and social engineering tactics being employed presently.. and moving forward.
